Bleeding gums is one of those taboo subjects that we just don’t talk about, i’m really not sure why this is. I’ve suffered from gum problems for many years now and after several treatments from the dentist my issues go away for a short while but not completely.
I like to think I take good care of my teeth, they are strong and apart from the obvious bleeding gum issue and sensitivity my teeth are doing ok. I’m 37 and only have 1 filling, I brush twice a day and floss with interdental brushes, I change my toothbrush on a regular basis but I still suffer from bleeding gums.
If you do notice blood in your saliva when brushing or flossing it’s a sign that your gums are not healthy and it could mean you have gum disease. This is something that affects 50% of adults worldwide.
WHAT CAUSES GUM DISEASE?
Gum disease is caused by plaque, a sticky film of bacteria that constantly builds up, on and in between, your teeth. If left unchecked, plaque will irritate the gums leading to redness and soreness. If allowed to continue, gum disease can cause serious problems. The gum may start to come away from the tooth, creating ‘pockets’ around it where even more plaque can grow. Over time, these pockets deepen, gums continue to recede and teeth can become loose.
I changed my toothpaste to Corsodyl ultra clean* 30 days ago and I thought I would share the results with you (don’t worry the results are not visual).
Day 1 – 5 Pink saliva when spitting after brushing, noticed it was not as dark as usual. Interdental brushes still very bloody after use.
Day 5 – 7 Saliva had only a small tint of pink when brushing. Interdental brushes had small amount of blood.
Day 7 – 13 No blood when brushing. When using interdental brushes there was only a small amount of blood on the brushes.
Day 13 – 30 No blood when brushing or when using interdental brushes.
The Corsodyl paste itself has a pleasant taste unlike some of the harsh chemically flavoured products I’ve received from my dentist to help with my gums. The toothpaste is actually formulated to help with bleeding gums so if you suffer like I do you may want to consider giving this a try as it targets the areas which can get a build up of bacteria (usually around the gum line).
I’ve been so impressed with this toothpaste that I’ve purchased it twice since my initial testing. If I’m completely honest I wasn’t sure this would work as well as it did, I’ve used similar products in the past which haven’t been great on my sensitive teeth but since using Corsodyl ultra clean even my sensitivity has improved. It may be a coincidence but since using this toothpaste I’ve not had an ulcer in my mouth which is unheard of as I’m really susceptible to them.

I hate my teeth, in fact if I can get away without letting people see them I will, I would love to either get fitted with a brace or have veneers but that would cost money that I just don’t have. As a child I was always encouraged to brush and floss at least twice a day and where possible to brush after eating sweets and this is something that has continued through adulthood. I was 31 when I needed my first filling compared to some of my friends who had a mouthful by the time they were in their late teens.
I’ve been using the new Oral B Pro-Expert Premium Gum Protection toothpaste for a month now and have just purchased a new tube of it because I love it so much. The main areas that this toothpaste targets are cavities, gum, plaque, sensitivity, enamel, tartar, whitening and breath. During my pregnancy I suffered from sensitive bleeding gums and this has continued since I had Arthur back in March. Since using the new Oral B toothpaste I’ve noticed a decrease in the sensitivity of my teeth which I’m thrilled about as sometimes I was finding it quite difficult to eat certain foods. The bleeding seems to have stopped which is a relief as bleeding gums is never a good sign. The toothpaste is clinically proven to help prevent and reduce gum problems in just four weeks, usually I take these claims with a pinch of salt but on this occasion I can only agree with it.

retarDEX* claims to eliminate bad breath, strengthen & help whiten teeth, kill bacteria that causes gum problems and is suitable for sensitive teeth. We all know that a lot of products on the market “claim” to do things but very few actually live up to what they say on the tin. I’ve seen retarDex on the shelves of boots but prior to trying the products out knew very little about them so I was rather interested to see how they lived up to the claims stated on the boxes.
First impressions of the products were that the packaging looked quite clinical, like something your dentist would use or recommend after treatment and the colours and name made me stupidly think that they might be quite harsh to the teeth. I must admit I found the name a little odd but it has not put me off trying the product. retarDEX is actually recommended by dentists and I get the impression this is the reason for the style of the packaging.
Although my first impression was that the products would be harsh on my teeth the mouthwash is alcohol free, unflavoured and contains no sugar or sweeteners. After reading the box I was not entirely sure what to expect from the mouth wash as I’m used to either a mouthwash with a strong mint flavour or a mouthwash that tastes like surgical spirit and has the feeling of a paint stripper once it enters your mouth. I have sensitive teeth so really have to be careful when selecting what products to use in my mouth.
The retarDex mouthwash has no flavour (you do get a packet of mint flavouring should you wish to use it) and I really like this, I often find it difficult to rinse my mouth for any length of time with a strong tasting mouthwash so the unflavoured taste works well for me.
It is recommended to use the mouthwash twice daily, I have been using it first thing in the morning and before I go to bed. The mouthwash needs to be swished back and forth between the teeth for 30 seconds which really is no time at all.
The mouthwash is currently available in boots for £6.12 for 250ml and £8.47 for 500ml
I’ve been using the toothpaste for around 4 weeks and I’m completely sold on the brand! what I love the most is the fact it doesn’t make you look like you have rabies when using it as is non foaming.
I’m a vigorous brusher when doing my teeth and often end up with toothpaste all over my lips due to the high foam that comes off most brands – not with this one! The taste is a very mild mint, nothing like most of the popular brands available.
In the short time I have been using this product I can confirm that the shade of my teeth have whitened. I use the toothpaste twice a day with the mouthwash and I’m very satisfied with the results.
The toothpaste is available in a 75ml tube for £8.12
This little beauty pictured above is the retarDEX purse spray, I was a huge purchaser of Mints and chewing gum as I like to drink coffee on the go and often worry about the dreaded “coffee breath”. This oral spray is a life saver! In the 4 weeks I’ve been using the product not one mint or piece of gum has passed my lips, I don’t need it! 3 sprays and my mouth has the just brushed feeling, it’s fantastic and i can’t recommend it enough.
The best bit is that a 10.4ml spray costs only £3.25 which works out so much cheaper than all of the mints and gum I would have purchased in 4 weeks.
I am a massive coffee drinker and I also enjoy tea, wine, garlic – all of the things that stain your teeth and give you a breath complex so having the knowledge that the retarDEX products contain clever chemistry that adapts to your needs to eliminate bad breath and keep your teeth white is a comfort.
I would like to add that I have been using these products for around 4 weeks and although I have purchased replacement products I have not actually ran out of any of the 3 yet!
Please note: The retarDEX mouthwash is not suitable for children 6 years and under.
retarDEX is available from Boots, selected Sainsburys, Tesco, Waitrose, Booths, Morrisons, Superdrug, Ocado.com and all good pharmacies and dental surgeries.
