Headlice are pesky little blighters, most parents with children will experience an outbreak of headlice at least once during the school years. Both of my children have suffered from headlice and just the thought of them makes me feel incredibly itchy.
How do you get headlice? Head lice are spread by direct head to head contact. They climb from one person’s hair to another’s. Headlice don’t have a preference for dirty, clean, long or short hair.
So how do you know if your child has headlice? The first sign is usually scratching of the head, the bite and saliva from the lice is what makes the scalp feel itchy.
What is the life cycle of a louse? The life Cycle of a louse last for approximately 50 days. Female lice lay between 5-10 eggs per day and after a week the egg hatches and reaches adulthood in 2 weeks. Adult lice live for about 30 days on a person’s head so you must act quickly.
How do you get rid of lice? There are two solutions against lice, you can use treatments with repellents or products which act mechanically. Lice do develop resistance to repellents which can actually be irritating to the scalp.
